I'm an at-home webmaster, curious about how it is "in the real world". I will answer this question for myself, below (and you may check my answer by comparing to others of my Yahoo! answers, if you wish). Are you jack-of-all-trades, master of none, or do you master of all? Rate, very briefly and honestly (and anonymously, as we are, your level of expertise in:

(1) hardware

(2) systems software (e.g. Windows, Mac)

(3) client-side languages (e.g. xhtml, css, javascript)

(4) server-side languages (e.g., php, asp, cgi, perl, vbasic, c, etc.)

(5) specialty languages (e.g. blog, widgets)

(6) communications, networking

(7) mobile devices

(8) graphics

(9) ...what is your level of education (e.g. PHD, Comp.Sci)

*My* answers to all-of-the above would be superficial-to-moderate (and it seems I grow farther behind as each day passes.) I was offered a scholarship in advanced math but turned around and got a B.A. in English... Eh?

1. extreme! everything from old micro processors to large mainframes!
2. extreme! I've been writing code for hundreds of platforms since punching my own cards!
3, extreme! I have used javascript way before there were widely accepted standards! same for css & html!
4. done php, perl, java, and most of the other non-microsoft languages!
5. I was writing rss feeds before people had blogs! I've played with widgets.
6 I'm a tcp/ip guru. I've used many other protocols, and have written a few!
7. I'm not excited by phone browsers, I've coded a bit for them, but they are too primitive today for serious UI, just the facts from a site! they world is changing with products like iphone, so specialty languages like WAP are going to be a thing of the past.
8. I can't draw a straight line, but can dynamically change size and opacity, and deal with any format! I can process them, but can't make good graphics myself!
9. BS comp sci, and 25 years experience and lots of specialty tech classes!

Now I am writing a non-computer book! But I still have time to create web 2,0 sites!
