I have a 1992 chevy cavalier. I know were my distributor is, but in the place it is, between my block and firewall, I can't see anything. or get my hand down to feel it. Does the wire I need to hook up my tachometer run to the top of my block? And is there a way to run a wire from my cabin to my engine compartment without drilling through my fire fall? HELP!

I own a shop, and its going to depend on which engine, and ignition system you have to help you. I will assume you have the HEI. The HEI has an internal coil, and has a total of four wire that come from the distributor. The one you will want to look for (in this case) will be a grey connector that goes to the instrument panel inside the car. Another (will also go to the inside) which goes to the ignition switch, and will have 12 volts on it when the ignition switch is in the on position. This too will be a grey connector, so its important to find the one that has 12 volts on it without the engine running, and the ignition switch in the on postition. The other grey connector will only have power when the engine is running, and will be the supply for the tach. The remaining two wires will be black, and go inside the distributor to the pick up coil. The other two systems used will be the Enhanced Distributor Ignition (EDI), and the (DIS) Distributorless Ignition System. If you do in fact have a distributor, the easy way to find this hook up is; to know the wire in which you need will come from inside the distributor. A EDI system will have a coil wire in the center of the distributor cap going to the coil, the HEI doesn't have a coil wire. Without knowing your system, the best I could do is; tell you to look for wires that go to the inside of the distributor, and your tach should hook to one of the outside (grey) wires, and it will be the one that has no electricity on it until the engine is running, while the other is the 12 volt supply (ignition) wire. I would suggest you go to the website of the Tach manufacture, and download a wiring diagram for your tach, or go to the library, and look up your system in a repair manual in the refference section that covers your vehicle and system.
As for your tach wire going through the firewall, just find a plug that is plastic, and already has a cable for the gas pedal going through it, and punch another hole along side the cable large enough to run the wire through... No problem.
Glad to help out, Good Luck!!!

HEI Distributors have an internal coil. The tach would connect to one of the wires at the base of the distributor. You will need a wire diagram for the exact one.
I have run the tach wires from the seam on the vent cowl in front of the windshield through the door weatherstrip and under the dash for an almost invisible hookup.

Not sure on hooking up the tach, but to put a wire thru the firewall without drilling is easy get a coat hanger and run it thru one of the boots that are already run thru, tape the wire to the end of the coat hanger and pull it thru. I would get some professional help on hooking up the tach. hooking to the wrong wire could knock out the computer..
