I don't underline my books, but I do use a highlighter! I have trouble seeing underlines passages when I am flipping through the pages, but highlighted text stands out to me. For me, it's not a problem to highlight and make margin notes in the books that I read the most often. I've never quite understood why so many people seem so against it (unless, of course, they're planning on selling it or something and don't want to damage the value). For me, the value is in the information and I could never part with my collection!

When I was in school, I would use different colored highlighters for different things so that when I would go back to study I could quickly locate whatever I needed. Now I primarily use yellow or pink, just because they are the easiest to read through!

I have a few books that were passed down to me from relatives, and I think it's fascinating when I come across notes in the margins. It's such an amazing connection to be reading a passage and then see what a family member who is no longer living thought of that same page!

I don't write in any books EXCEPT my writing texts and one copy of the Complete Shakespeare. Since I am a professional writer, I don't part with good writing texts and anyone I might be tempted to lend them to would understand why something is highlighted. Yes, I use highlighters.

Occasionally I will write down passages or poems I really like from other books for either teaching purposes or my own private anthology. Author is always credited.

The Shakespeare is a different story. I bought it with a lot of notes already in it so I don't feel guilty adding more. That particular copy is where I note where I've seen Shakespeare quoted. It's a fun thing to do. Star Trek has the record for Shakespeare quotes, but passages have also cropped up in Beauty & The Beast, Ally McBeal, and even The Simpsons.

I have probably 1400 books I don't write in and 15 to 20 that I do.

I am moody when it comes to this issue. It depends on my mood. And it depends on several factors. For example, if it's a book I love, love, love AND if it's a book I have more than one copy of...then I am much more prone to underline in it. Like, I have four or five copies of Gone With The Wind in various conditions. The most worn out copies become fair game for marking up since I have better, newer copies to read and enjoy. But if I only have one copy of a book, I'm not really anxious to mark it all up. What I might do if I'm particularly excited about a passage is mark in the margin either a bracket for a paragraph that was good or mark it with one or more *** to let me be able to find it again. I find those kinds of mark don't interfere with the text--particuarly since some of my highlighting gets a little clumsy or sometimes the ink will smear--and it makes the text more difficult to read. As to what I like to mark with, again it's a mood thing. There are times when I'm in love with pencils. And there are times when only ink will do--beit black, blue, or purple. But 90% of times I don't mark in books.

If it's a book that might be lent out to someone then I don't underline in it but otherwise if it's a nice book that you're keeping and not giving away or lenidng the it's fine to underline and make notes. It's more convenient if you do it in pencil.

I underline if it's a book I will keep. It makes a quick reference for my favorite passages.
I usually use blue ink, since that's what I have all over the house.

I use to never dare mark my books- considered marking in a book a horrible un bearable act!
then I started learning literature- and was practically forced to mark my books (you can't sit with a 1200 pages novel in a test- and find certain sentances if they are not marked!!)
so some of my books are marked- I pain stickingly marked them..

but the rest of my books I don't mark. if there is something I love, or want to remeber, or caught my eye- I write it down somewhere else, the whole part, line, combination of words- plus the author and what book it is from (sometimes also the page).

yeah...

Since I love books I don't like the idea of marking in them, but sometimes some words/phrases touch me very much that I have to read them again and again. I write down the pages or use a bookmark to leave in the page. Sometimes I copy the phrases in my journal books so that I can read them again and again. But marking in the book is a big no-no for me, unless the book is a text book that you have to buy in college or university to study for courses. Then I used highlighters!

I do NOT write in books. I just can't. If it is a book I teach, and the page itself is relevant, I put a note on a bookmark (the note sticks out) with the page number, so I can put it back easily if it falls you.

If it is a quote or concept I like, I write it in my commonplace book (like a journal), or type the relevant part on my computer.

I underline using a ruler and blue pen if it is mine. So useful.

I have a document on my computer that is solely for quotes that I like from books and movies. I am going on eleven pages. Mostly they are from movies, though.

I don't like marking books. For some reason, I am anal about it.
