Well, let me tell you something, I attended Catholic school all my life in my country and we had every day one hour of religion, and one day they explain to us why was the purpose to swear, it was to avoid blasphemy and using bad words against God. They said to us, that instead to say the name of God in vain or to mention his name for a blasphemy, they "invented" words to swear in a moment of frustration, anger, etc. They said also, that isn't nice to swear, everything is better to mention Gods name.
