What can be done to mend the ideological divide in this country?

Also, do you think people like Ann Coulter and Al Franken are harming the USA by using divisive rhetoric?

Yes, I do believe that. The ideological divide isn't the problem. The problem is the thought that "if you disagree with me, you hate my country, therefore, I hate you."

People need to be willing to accept that, even if our methods of getting there are very different, our end goal is the same: to keep our country intact. And the only way to do that is to rise up TOGETHER, in a mutually agreeable way, to combat anything or anyone that is trying to destroy this country.

However, this is hindered by the "My country is always right" mentality a lot of people espouse. Our country is not always right. Our country, beautiful as it is, is also imperfect and our government WILL make (and HAS made) mistakes. We all need to be able to accept that and to change our course of action as needed to rectify those mistakes.

And yes, Ann Coulter and Al Franken are, indeed, harming our country. But we're letting them.

Here's the stone cold truth:

America is done for. It's over.

The United States of America that your dad grew up in, the America that your grand-father grew up in is gone -- forever.

What we are seeing now is nothing more than an economic zone, the shell of its former self.

In 40 years, the US will all but be run by foreign peoples, who came from other lands. People who are looking to make a quick buck instead of turning their homelands into good places to live. Do a demographics study and see what's going to happen.

Daily life in a dangerous thirdworld country will be normal life throughout much of the US in the future. Extortion, corrupt cops, drugs trafficing, street gangs, drug gang warefare, stealing from your checking account, rape, etc. That's the future.

When people cross into the US, they don't suddenly turn into saints. In fact, American media and culture is so full of depravity and loss of ethics, that it'll encourage third world behavior. There's no mainstream moral standard against the coming increase in an dangerous culture.

Additionally, except for people of European decent, there are political lobby groups and "quick to sue you" groups for almost every ethnic group in the US. These groups only care about what's in the best interest of their particular ethnic group, not what's in the best interest of America.

A nation consists of a group of similar peoples who are self governed. The only thing Americans have in common is Starbucks and Microsoft Word on their computer.

Ideologically, America is divided too. It's also divided on a religious basis too.

Fact of the matter is, America 70 years from now, save a miracle, will be broken up. The only question is, will you need to move to a different state and how long before this reaches critical mass.

Discourse is good and I am glad we have two sides. That is what makes the USA GREAT! We each keep each other in check and I'm proud of that fact.

We have, however, become quite abusive in our language toward each other, our leaders and our President. That's not cool.

I do believe that Coulter and Franken need to sit in a corner and be made to hold hands until they can act appropriately in public.

1. Not necessarily. It depends on interpretation, you must remember that the original states were under a single party: Federalist.

2. Not much. Education is the only thing that can heal it. Other than that, there is no way of changing on a mass scale.

3. Obviously. But as long as people buy their garbage, they'll continue to spew it out.

to mend the ideological divide, ELIMINATE THIS POLITICAL CORRECTNESS NONSENSE!

Divisive rhetoric comes from all sides and yes, it is harming our national unity, or what is left of it.

Absolutely

Nothing. But there is one thing that can mend anything, a threat so great that it threatens everybody and everything. Of course there will probably be those that will "want to talk."

Yes.
