If you're talking about Norplant: the impants (it's six matchstick sized tubes inserted under the skin of your upper arm) are good for five years -- after that time you have to have them removed (of course, you can have them removed earlier).
I did not find insertion painful, it was a short procedure and the local anesthesia did the job. Removal took a little longer and was less comfortable, and it's not unusual for there to be more poking, prodding, and pain with removal. Scarring has been minimal.
Qualitatively, the side effects and risks are about the same as with any hormonal birth control, which of course also means that if you smoke, are over 35, have any kind of clotting issues, etc. you shouldn't use Norplant. (The typical side effects with Norplant include pretty extreme mood swings and depression.) However, women have experienced the side effects generally more severely with Norplant, and more frequently, than with other hormonal birth control. Because of that, and the resultant lawsuits as well, Norplant has fallen out of favor, as it were, and is no longer available in some places -- including the United States. So, if you're in the US, Norplant is no longer an option for birth control.

the implant lasts 3 years not 5, i had it in for 2 years got it removed last year due to constant bleeding my periods were a mess my arm was always itchy, i would say give it a try you can always have it removed if you get any unpleasant side effects, some people find there periods stop which would have suited me fine but not much point in having the implant in if i could never have sex due to bleeding all the time
it does not hurt at all to have it put in or taken out but you may get a nasty bruise but thats nothing
the ones that lasted 5 years are no longer used!

I had an Implanon last year. They give you an aneasthetic when they put it in and it is a bit bruised for a week or so. Doesn't really hurt much. They are supposed to last 2 years, but I had mine taken out because I was getting 2 periods a month. No other side effects though.
I've switched to the Mirena IUS now which lasts 5 years. I've had some problems with cramping, but I'm told this is because I've got a very small uterus. Who knew?

Implant as in the rods in your arm? Or an IUD/coil? You do NOT want to be using both Implanon and birth control pills. That's too many hormones and not the right balance of hormones. Did the doctor who prescribed your pills know you already had the implant? And if you mean an IUD -- while there's no inherant danger is using both, it's probably not necessary. If you don't like your implant, have it removed and switch to another method that better meets your needs.

Not all doctors do this so you may need to go to the family planning clinic.

I've tried it. Was fine - other than completely destroying my sex drive! I've heard of this happening with other women too.
Have you tried the contraceptive pill 'Yasmin'? No side effects other than fabulous skin! I've tried many different kinds of pill but this one is best.
Think carefully and best of luck
