His affliction of polio changed him quite dramatically. He was better able to prioritize agendas due to his experience with polio. His values took on a different quality afterwards, and improved his decision-making process.

RE:
why was Franklin D. Roosevelt a good leader?

He was a good leader because he saw what needed to be done to get the nation moving again in spite of the depression and did it. Maybe his technique was more socialist than is popular these days, but that was what was needed at the time. He led the United States competently and confidently through it's two greatests crises; the depression and world war 2.

When FDR became President, America was in the depths of the Great Depression. I remember as a young boy, going to New York City with my Dad and seeing endless lines of unemployed or homeless men and women on the Bread Line; there were also men standing on cornors selling Pencils and or Apples . The stock Market had not recovered from the crash of 1929, and people lost not only their savings but their homes as well. It was a terrible time, and I remember that my Mom and Dad worked at anything they could get 7 days weekly to keep a modest roof over our heads and food. No extras, no new clothes and really no hope. FDR in his first term of office propped up the Banks, so that people could borrow money and start life anew; he created what was later termed as the alphabet projects. The NRA, the National Recovery Act; The WPA the Works Project
Administration; Th CCC the Civilian Conservation Corps and many others. Gradually, people started to pick themselves up and move forward. As the 1930's moved on, it became evident that the world would agian see a World War, and our industries started to re-tool and needed a work force . Gradually, we came out of those dark years of the late 1920''s and early 1930's. It was his first Administration that helped to bring back a sense of hope for the future.Poeple wnet back to work, construction on new homes started, the inovations of the radio as a means of communicting to the public became popular, the aircraft industry began to flourish, steel mills were turning out steel and so it went.
There was something about FDR that told us that we did indeed have a leader. His famous sppech in which he said:"we have nothing to fear but fear itself"
gave the poeple courage, and his Fireside chats on radio kept up our spirits and morale. That many critized him as creating a quasi Socialist Government may be true, but democracy prevailed and America prospered and so did her people.

What makes you think he was? His policies were failing until we entered the war. It was not Roosevelt that was so great, it was the generation.
He gets alot of credit. For what? Having "fireside chats?"

FDR was a good leader only if you like socialist agendas.
