If you can find one, then it wouldn't be a mistake.

XP will continue to be the workhorse for a while - Vista is going to take some time to get up to speed with drivers, compatibility etc.

But have no fear - microsofts crack team of customers who don't mind paying money and doing free troubleshooting for uncle Bill are on the job.

no it would not be a mistake to buy one with xp if that is what you would like, most vendors are giving out coupons to upgrade to vista later, but not sure how long they are good for, just make sure that you ask that windows xp be installed and let them know that you want it that way and will not change your mind

No, it would be a good idea. Vista is still in it's infant stages and a lot of software doesn't work with it yet. I would wait until they get compatibility issues worked out before upgrading to Vista.

not necessarily. it depends on how you want to use it. for graphics design, etc. many pros prefer Mac. For the average user tho, XP is good enough. Also, most programs are compatible with XP than with Mac or Vista.

Buying any Windows system is a mistake. Buy a Mac, they're worth every penny. You won't find a better notebook than a MacBook or MacBook Pro.
