Operations management is an area of business that is concerned with the production of goods and services, and involves the responsibility of ensuring that business operations are efficient and effective. It is also the management of resources and the distribution of goods and services to customers.
Operations also refers to the production of goods and services, the set of value-added activities that transform inputs into many outputs. Fundamentally, these value-adding creative activities should be aligned with market opportunity (see Marketing) for optimal enterprise performance.

I have had a career in operations for some time. Operations management can be applied to MANY different industries and many times, operations manager (at a entry level) works along side hourly laborours. As the manager you may have some say in personnel, production and the like.
Going forward, operations management is a wide description of duties. Personnel, profit/loss analysis, billing, customer recruitment and retention are sample duties. In summary, the field in which an operations manager is within will really determine all of the duties.

General and operations managers plan, direct, or coordinate the operations of companies or public and private sector organizations. Their duties include formulating policies, managing daily operations, and planning the use of materials and human resources, but are too diverse and general in nature to be classified in any one area of management or administration, such as personnel, purchasing, or administrative services. In some organizations, the duties of general and operations managers may overlap the duties of chief executive officers.
