Mary was given the white clothes because i think those were what covered Jesus's body (his privates) the other white cloth was lent to Jesus to wipe the blood and sweat that was running down his face.

Im pretty sure that one of them was to represetn or end up being a shroud, its been a while since I have seen the movie, or evn disscussed it in church.
