It was a "horrible ending" with "weird hell scenes" because the climax of the movie revealed that the spaceship Event Horizon had gone through the wormhole in time the way that Sam Neill's charachter said it would, but the other side of the wormhole was not a new universe, it was hell itself and the spaceship became a conduit for hell.

The "survivors" we at least hope, closed the wormhole by blowing up the spaceship "Event Horizon", but the nightmare by Joely Richardson's character at the end did leave the possibility open for a sequal that is did not.

As it was not a blockbuster, the producers may just leave well enough alone, but who knows, years down the line when the studios are looking for "fresh" story ideas, they might revive this one and do a sequal.

Yeah, bad ending and a pretty weird movie. The only one that is worse is "In the Mouth of Madness", also with Sam Neil. I like Lovecraft and his stories. However, "In the Mouth of Madness" was just not a great adaptation of his work.
