Yes they wanted to charge me £870 for 3 months electricity for a one-bed flat. Told them where to get off, they said they would investigate and send me a new bill. Received a new bill for.... £945!!

Phoned back, was informed they would do more investigation and send another bill. This went on for about a year, kept rejecting bills and they kept getting less. Eventually got one for about £200, paid it.

Then got asked "since my new property was with someone else, would I be interested in switching to British Gas..." @£$!&$!!

Yes with both of them and also B. T. It is usually the case that you end up with an Indian operator who is told to give a false English name and only permitted to deal with a straightforward enquiry.
This is not the fault of the operator but a means to fob you off with your complaint.
The best course of action if you encounter this situation is to ask to speak to a British operator as it is an administration problem you have to discuss.
If they are unable to resolve the problem then send a letter outlining the issue in fine detail, do not resort to e-mail as it is treated in the same manner as a telephone call they will say they did not receive.
If this course of action fails go straight to your M P with the facts.
Make sure you are right and are armed with the facts before you pursue a complaint as it is a faceless corporate organisation you are dealing with.
Don't be faint hearted and give in this is how they make their millions and the reason why Thatcher privatised them in the first place.
Remember we are told we live in a democracy so let them prove that this is the case.

I work for british gas - and i also have my home supply with british gas , i have such problems with them - and even i cant get this sorted out - i havnt recieved a bill for gas for over 6 months - not for the lack of trying..( i know i'll get lumbereed with a huge bill once they get their fingers out their asses) . so i totally sympethise for what your going through...

BEST THING TO DO THAT ALWAYS WORKS...... IS COMPLAIN TO ENERGY WATCH - YOU ALWAYS GET A RESULT.

if you are disputing readings on the account - take them at regular intervals about a week apart- if you havnt provided the reads ensure that you do and make a log of times dates and phonecalls made. its the only way to get what you want. ( also send a copy of you itemised phonebill and get your call costs back) if you are trying to call their main number is always busy but if you'vre registered on house, its normally a bit quicker. so check it out..

We had problems with BG some years ago...and we eventually got it sorted by going to the Energy Ombudsman...we even got a letter of apology and a £50 check for the distress!
