It's generally custom that the birthday person not pay for his/her dinner. Sometimes it may be appropriate if the birthday boy/girl has invited friends himself/herself and chooses a restaurant that may be out of everyone else's price range, but generally the guests will split the cost of the birthday person's meal. You have very nice friends, be grateful! :-)

It was nice of them by inviting you since it was YOUR birthday but if you had doubts regarding who had or not to pay, you should have invited them for an after dinner drink.

There is no birthday rule but invite them again and you pick up the check. Just be glad you have great friends.
If you want to make sure it doesn't happen again--see the manager and take care of it in advance.

Generally the birthday person is gifted. It was exceedingly generous and polite for you to offer to pay, and you can hardly be blamed if you were forced to be treated.
(If you want to pay next time, discretely ask the server to give the check to you before the end of the meal.)
Happy birthday!

No good friend would let the bday person to pay for their own dinner or anyone elses. But if you intend to, you should tell your invitees that you are going to treat them to dinner when you invite them.

It's a cultural thing. In some cultures, it is always the celebrant who pays, and here in the US it is generally never the celebrant who pays. About the only thing you can do about it is to make it clear before the dinner that it is your treat, not after.
