There are some meds that are safe. Before taking them though, check with your OB to make sure they are safe. Maybe the two docs should be conferring if they are not already.

Ziprasidone (Geodon) is a pregancy risk categeory C, quetiapine fumarate (Seroquel) is a category C and aripiprazole (Abilify) is also a category C drug. The categories go from A to X.

A: No evidence of risk to the fetus.
B: No studies in pregnant women but in animal studies no risk.
C: Animal studies show adverse fetal effects, no studies in pregnant women. Give if benefits outweighs risk.
D: Postive evidence of risk to human fetus. Benefits must outweigh the risks.
X: Risks clearly outweigh benefits. Contraindicated in pregnancy, studies in both animals and human demonstrate that drug causes fetal abnormalities.

Your psychiatrist is also a medical doctor and understands what the categories mean. Speak to your OB/Gyn about the advisability of taking any of these medications.

Of course he will tell you they are safe, you probably need to take them, that's why! But no, they are not safe, no prescription drug is safe, not even over the counter. When you are pregnant, you need to be aware of what you put in your system, that child will ingest all you take. All those drugs are for treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Unfortunately you have to take them for your own safety. There is nothing you can do...

it doesn't matter what type of doctor it is, pyschiatrist or not they wouldn't tell you to take it if it wasn't safe. All dr's have a PDR which tells you about the drugs, when and when not to take them and the side effects and ect. trust me i know i am a doctor.

Don't trust your psychiatrist alone unless he or she is also acting as your obstetrician. Although psychiatrists are medical doctors, they are not necessarily experts in obstetrics, and unless she is handling your case as your OB she will not know specifically what is going on with you physically. Your OB will know what is going on with your pregnancy and should consult with your psychiatrist about medications you're on.

I was taking paxil and trazadone and my gyn took me off all of them as soon as I found out I was pregnant. ask your doctor not your pharmacist, a pharmacist is not a certified doctor.
