To focus only on sexual release seems almost animalistic, no matter which orientation your refer to.

Would there be an advantage to use the term "affectional orientation" to acknowledge the human elements in sexuality?

Yes, yes, yes, and a million times YES!!!! I love this idea. I think it's sad that child predators are called pedoPHILES, lovers of children, while homoSEXUALS refers to people who truly love someone. The main problem with perception is that people think we are sex fiends and forget that we have romance and love.

YES!!!!

I would think not as "Affectional" is a wider term in that you have a range and or type of affection for various people in your life. For example, I'm strongly affectionate to my wife, daughters, nephews and nieces. NOTE: I do not express that affection the same way! I'm still affectionate to varying degrees to my various in laws. But out of all these relationships, the only sexual one is my wife.

Perhaps Commitment Orientation would be slightly better.

No. I think that term would actually be too non-descriptive. We have affectionate feelings not only to our significant others but also our friends and family members. How do you feel about the term "Erotic Orientation"? I don't know. That probably wouldn't work either because "erotic" pretty much equals "sexual".

No, because affectional orientation does not describe sexuality, but something entirely different and more noble.

Well, not really. Like someone else already said, "affectional" is too broad. But the best idea is to get "sex" out of all labels.
We're so much more than that. All of us, gay and str8 and in between.

A rose by any name would smell as sweet.

However I do not like the term you have suggested.

Why not take it one more step. Instead of homosexual why not call it homoaffectional?

I think if you take the "sex" out of homosexual and heterosexual a lot of the wierdness between the two would stop.
