cell refers to cellular - when the network was first put in place you coudl only get service in specific locations or 'cells' - consider ewach antenna location out there as the center of a cell, as the network expanded the issues of having to be in a cell went away - although the system still uses that in determining where you are located in the phone network.

It is because each transponder ( or mobile phone mast ) services a small area. Thus the country is split up into a collection of these areas or cells. As you move around, you phone automatically connects to the transponder with the strongest signal. In some areas the signal is blocked by buildings etc and so you can't use your phone mobile phones were originally called cellular phones and the Americans have stuck with the abbreviaton cell phones

The type of wireless communication that is most familiar to mobile phones users. Called "cellular" because the system uses many base stations to divide a service area into multiple "Cells". Cellular calls are transferred from base station to base station as a user travels from cell to cell.

Cell 'phone is correct.

Mobile 'phone is, at best, questionable.

Considering that it's a radio transceiver .....

A "mobile" radio is one which is installed (fixed) into a vehicle - land, sea or air.

One which is carried in the hand is, would you believe, a "hand-held" radio - the ubiquitous "walkie talkie." Just like a cell 'phone.
