While I understand your a witness in the altercation, the law states that in order to prove self-defense, you must have been in iminent danger of phisical harm or loss of life. While a push does constitute an assault, it "does not" meet the criteria for the "self-defense" Defense. As far as getting Him out of jail w/o $$, if He doesn't have a criminal record that's extensive, YOU, Could ask the Judge in the case to release Him upon a Personal Bond or a Promise to appear. This is not B/S, I have done this. An accused person that has someone in their corner to argue they're reputation and vouche for them goes a long way with the Court.

Self defense ends when the threat of harm ends. For example, if your boyfriend was being hit and hit back that can be self defense. Once the other person stops hitting, if your boyfriend continued to fight it isn't self defense. Don't worry about the lawyer, he will get one once he is charged if he can't afford one. If you don't have money to bail him out then he will remain in jail through trial. You will have a bail hearing within a few days. That is when a lawyer will be appointed and will probably ask for release on recognizance. If your boyfriend does not have a record and the charge is minor then bail should be low. However if your boyfriend caused serious harm to this guy his bail might be quite high.

A file won't work, but unless there are a few more thing brewing in the background that you aren't telling he won't be in long.
Is this really what you want out of life? Is there nothing more you can hope for than guns, and fights and ************? Jails and bail bonds?
That's really so sad, for all of you.

Without funds, you can't bail him out. He will have to remain in jail until such time as the judge sees fit to free him; he could possibly be released on his own recognizance depending on the real circumstances.

I don't exactly see a case for self-defense here. I just see a temper he couldn't keep in check.
