Yeah it can freak a betta out. Instead of doing weekly (or however often you do it) 100% changes, try doing small daily changes. Get a clean turkey baster, and, every day, suck out half the water along with any uneaten food and poop, and replace with fresh dechlorinated water. It'll take all of 3 minutes, and your betta will be much healthier.
Like Nunya mentioned, a bowl is far from ideal. Yes, it's better than a cup, but those cups are meant to be extremely temporary. Think of it like a bus stop in the winter. You can stand waiting for a few minutes, but you wouldn't want to be there for long (that's like the cup). Then you're on the bus, and it's better, but you wouldn't want to live there (that's the bowl).
Anyway, many keepers have succesfully kept bettas in bowls, provided that the water is very frequently cleaned and that the water is kept warm, but a small tank with filter and heater is the best option.

I have two and they do the same thing. your fish should eventually get used to the water changings. Also a little tip: if you put your Betta by a mirror a little bit a day it is apparently supposed to help your fishy live longer. You Betta could be upset because you upset it's nest. That's what the bubbles are at the top of your bowl. Here a link that might help:

Good Luck!

It is probably stressing him out everytime and too much stress can lower their immune system and make them more susceptible to disease. The bowl I'm sure is better then the cup they keep them in at the store but it still isn't what is best for the fish they really should have a tank with heater and filter.

Try putting in the same temperature water when you do the exchange of water. Put in a stress coat too as that should calm him a bit. Am Quel I think is the name.

Your fish is just reacting to the water change. It should get used to it the more water changes you do..... once it figures out that your not trying to hurt him.

They do that because those girls are easier to approach cause they are all flirting with us. But in the long run they will want to be with the shy nice girl, which i pick over the loud ones in the first place. You just need to find the right guy.

Yep. It probably makes them scared of you... thinking that you're going to dump them again.
Changing water is pretty traumatic for fish.
