It's merely based on the concept of self-fulfilling prophecy, the concept sociologists use to determine certain events a person or group of persons go through. While it does effectively work as a concept, the danger lies with what some people link at the event. Some people really determine that this concept can only work because of some higher power placing it's hand on the event and making it all better, luring the person who wants the change into something they didn't want or expect in the first place. The real power of this event lies not in religion, theories or statistics, but in the sheer power of the own mind, wanting to make it better for yourself and changing the way you look at it entirely.
However, how powerfull and wonderfull this concept can work, it can work equally strong in the other direction. Then it's called self-destroying prophecy. Just like what some people who had to deal with concering automutilation; they feel bad, they cut themselves, they feel bad because of the cutting and wounds and decide to punish themselves by cutting some more...
It's the same concept, just in reverse.
The entire concept can therefore be very powerfull in the hands of those who can wield it. But this counts for almost anything in life.
