are there any animals alive today that can be connected to the great lizard like dinosaurs of the past? I have heard of some birds that can be connected but I'm much more interested in land animals.

dinosaurs were actually a kind of bird, there have been many findings of feathers on the fossils of many dinosaurs. the closest relative of the t-rex is thought to be the ostrich, which is a land animal and a bird.
