I have to say, it would be confusing to suddenly introduce a different stance on sexuality at ten years old. The point is valid. The solution, of course, is to teach tolerance at all ages. Homosexuality, like heterosexuality, should probably not be described in detail until age 12 or so (puberty), but simply teaching that it makes no sense to shun people who live with and are very close and affectionate to a person of their own gender (because these are the relevant differences the kid would notice) should definitely be implemented whenever it is relevant (ie, whenever they might shun or notice such shunning taking place), both before and after the age of ten.

No not safe. Jeas. I'm bisexual but kids should not be shown that kind of stuff that early in life. Well unless there is gay parents than its okay I guess. But don't throw the child into a gay training class. Just bring the child up knowing that men and women have childeren and get married and all that crap. They can deal with the whole gay thing later in life. But if your gay just try and sway him/her towards straight. It will make it better in their life. You already know this.

No, but then again there is nothing safe in this world. I think they should know that being gay is a choice, noone is born that way. Kids should also know that gay people should be treated no differently than anyone else, irregardless of religious beliefs. The parent should also inform the child of their own views on homosexuality and what they feel is or is not acceptable.

Kids are a lot smarter than you give them credit for. If you are going to teach kids stuff you have to teach them reality. Gay is part of reality. No need to go into details at age 10 but no reason to make them afriad of it either.

When you are teaching children about human sexual orientation, just don't favor one natural orientation over the other.
If it is safe to bring up the subject at all, then it is safe to discuss the entire spectrum.
Only parents know when the appropriate time to discuss relationships, and later sex, is with their children.
Of course, neither LGBT nor straight sexual orientation should be depicted as "wrong" or "better," just variants.

Good lord, no. Teaching childeren this is not right, as I am a gay and if I had known to be open when I was younger, there would have been ridcule, teasing, bullies, etc..., Luckily, I kept in the closest until college, where most people don't give a ****.

I think it is more than safe, and how can teaching acceptance instead of hatred be a negative trait to teach a child?
The only difference between a heterosexual and homosexual person is the gender of the person he/she chooses to have sex with.
I think this, whom one chooses to have sex with, is a totally personal and private matter and has nothing to do with a person's "safeness" or unsafeness. A child molester is totally different from a homosexual person. Perhaps what is needed is more education to dispel people's misunderstandings.
I truly do not think that bringing more understanding and acceptance into our world is a bad thing.

You shouldn't teach kids to be open to gay *or* straight life. You teach them not to be prejudice, racist, or a bigoted. Basically, you don't teach your child to hate.

you should teach children to be open to lots of different types of families....and one thing you dont seem to be aware of....by the age of 10 most children have already experienced their first crush....and the crappy part is that if they've crushed on someone of the same sex and havent been told this is normal for them, they may grow up to screw up some man or womans life by trying to fit into what small window of the world they have been taught to see...
food for thought....
