IMO, an overwhelming number of blacks are more in favor of the government assistance programs that most democrats administer. Welfare, WIC, and others are why anyone, not necessarily blacks, lean toward the democratic party. Of course, this doesn't apply to all, but I feel that is one of the main reasons.
You might gain more relaxed laws by siding with democrats, but you'll pay for it...literally. Democrats feel it necessary to impose heavy taxes to pay for the "greater good". This idea is self-corrupting. Republicans don't want to seperate church and state, and while giving some tax breaks, we're stuck with more restrictive laws.
Vote Libertarian!

Yes. Democrats do pursue our vote as if they want it. Republicans could give less than a crap. When they do ask for our vote then they stab us in the back. Bush came to lay a wreath on the grave of MLK to pay for a government funded trip. He was there less than an hour at the MLK center and spent the rest of the day Republican fund-raising and not speaking to any other black groups. Hypocrisy and let's not start on Katrina. More Iraqi people get assistance than the Katrina victims who were mostly Black. But let less than 10 white people get killed in the South and he is on a plane the next day. Need I say more....

Because Democrats actively pursue the black vote. How many Republicans did you see in Selma over the weekend? The first guy is full of crap. There are as many white people on public assistance as there are blacks.

This is because not many of them are among the richer half of Americans ... They do benefit from state schemes that ensure that everyone receives a standard mimimum level of health, education, assistance through hard times; policing cartels & sales tactics; .... - and they DO NOT benefit from a Republican laissez-faire society, where there is no help from any govt institution and everybody is left to fend for themselves.

Probably for the same reason that many black folk vote Labour here in UK. These are the 'handout' parties who are most likely to feel guilty and give benefits to those who do not deserve them. These are the parties who are more interested in the work-shy and the criminal than they are in the 'worker' and the 'victim of crime'.

Simple: blacks are, on average, poorer than whites, and poor people are more likley to vote Democratic than Republican.
