Why the USA call themselves a superpower?

The answer is explainable on many levels. First from an economic standpoint, our economy is the most vital to the global economy. We fund more foreign aid than any other country. (no one else is even close) We fund the largest portion of the UN and help to support many other countries with humanitarian aid. Even ones that hate us.

Secondly from a military standpoint, we have the most advanced and well trained military in the world. Although we are currently in a quagmire in Iraq, this is only because of our policy to do everything we can to avoid civilian casualties and maintain Iraqi infrastructure. If we absolutely needed to we could gain total control there within a matter of days, but we would rather tolerate our military in danger that risk accidentally killing civilians.

Thirdly, I believe that even with all of our shortcoming, we are still a nation that can be looked to as a beacon of hope and promise. One of the largest problems that the United States faces right now is the flow of illegal immigrants. It is a very telling thing when millions of people from around the globe are willing to leave everything they have, just to come here, where they have the opportunity for a better, more prosperous life.

They are called a super power because of the size of the Country and everything that goes with it - i.e military, economy etc etc. China is fast catching up though and could easily replace them as the largest superpower. The USSR was obviously in the running with the US during the Cold War, but since the USSR was split up, that only left the US. Nothing to do with Nukes, though it is to do with how many, as there are many Nuclear Powers in the World. This is one of the reasons the USA do not want a European Super State as has often been discussed as the Europeans would then take over as the largest Superpower. The World therefore calls the US a Superpower as basically they are the only remaining one....at the moment.....Nothing to do with ego, etc. though that is often evident amongst some....by the way - we wouldn't be speaking German or Arabic - please take the time to read details on WWII before making rash claims. The arabs are an American problem that certain other Countries decided to help you with.

It's open to interpretation whether America is a superpower. Some would argue that as America has the greatest ability to project power around the world and is the richest country, it should be classed as a superpower.

In my opinion 'superpower' is a daft name, as it allows a country to put itself on a pedestal and shout at other countries to do what it as it says or else. What I hate most is how the American President is called 'the leader of the free world' - how demeaning to the rest of the world is that?!

The theory is that with all this military power, we are the peace keepers of the world. Unfortunately, out wonderful president has abused his authority and instead turned us into the worlds biggest bully.

They don't call themselves a super power. Others do. But they are an intelligent, wealthy, and knowledgeable country. Their soldiers are being killed trying to stabilise other country's under dictatorship,even if things don't go their way. They are the most indebted country in the world. The US National Debt is a mind-boggling $7 TRILLION DOLLAR... and rising every minute at a astonishing rate.

Superpower because of weapons... and their military machine. No other country has the extent of "blue water" military capability (ships, subs and aircraft hangers) to project power anywhere which can be reached by oceans, backed by considerable advanced air power.

Update: China doesn't have "blue water" capability. USA worries that one day it might seek it. USA doesn't want China bossing the international oceans.

Update 2: BTW I'm not anti USA. I just think UK has a responsibility to act as honest council on some of the more foolhardy US policy (as in we should have stood up against the Neo-Con policy, which also stirred fear in the US citizens [most of who are honest and trustful] which led to war in Iraq - instead it seems we were complicit in whipping up reasons to invade)

They are a superpower because they speak English, however had we known they would slaughter native Indians and steal their land from them, we would have let the Spanish take over and right now they would be welcoming Mexican people in the South instead of complaining that the primary language on all packaging (in the South) is in Spanish.
