Our name is a gift to us from our parents. It can motivate us to develop the quality inherent in the meaning of the name. For instance, my name "David" means "beloved of God". That's a great message to me and a good reminder to try and live in such a way as to show appreciation to God.
Sometimes our names challenge us, and sometimes we receive new names because of some significant event in our lives.
For instance: "Jacob's" name was changed to "Israel" by God when he wrestled with the angel. "Peter's" name was changed by Christ (from "Simon") when he made his confession of the divinity of Christ. Others because of some particular act of infamy attach new significance to their name (i.e. not many people call their children "Judas" or "Benedict" anymore).
