The easiest team to have would be to have two heavy hitters and two spell casters.

The two 'fighters' can be a warrior, theif etc. Then just have two magic users.

When I beat FFI, I had a team consisting of a Warrior, monk, black mage and white mage. It levels the team out and some bosses and enemies are very weak aganist certain magic elements like ice or fire. A white mage is a necessity to heal your party, but make sure you teach any other characters who can learn healing magic it. It'll save you many a times.

Best party would have to be 2 fighters (taking up the top two slots), and then a white mage and a black mage (so you can have the strongest spells from both schools of magic). Make sure the Fighters are in the top two slots, though! They'll be taking the majority of the attacks from up there. This game was a breeze with this combination!

Wow, FF1 brings back some memories. I don't know of a "best FF1 party" ,but when I played and beat the game I used a fighter, thief, white mage, black mage and 2 fighters white and black mage. The black mage can make your life a little easier with the fire, cold and lightning spells that pack a nice punch and work very well on boss mobs. There is nothing to say that your chosen party right now will not beat the game, but I never played FF1 without a black mage.

I had a balanced group. A fighter, a red mage, a white mage, and a black mage. The red mage and fighter deal the real damage, the black mage does the magic, the white does the healing, and the red can cover in case someone dies.
