No brainer hands down Neil Peart from rush,close second would have to be the drummer from Dream Theater who without a doubt has used peart as a direct influence

this is really a pretty ridiculous question. drumming's an art...and if neil peart were to sit on a jazz session, he'd suck. if buddy lee were to get in on a prog session, he'd suck.

First what you have to ask yourself is what makes the best drummer? In my opinion, to be best in any art, you got to master the techniques (become best technically) and apply them in your own style, which will lead to developing and creating own styles. With that said, there is no question that Neil Peart is the best drummer.
To get to appreciate his work, you would need to go back to his roots in Rush - personally I think you can listen to his mastery in YYZ (Moving Pictures album) and in every live album they have.
