It really depends on the manufacturer of the HD. There are many utilities like Western Digital's, "Data Life Guard Tools" .
There are also freeware/shareware utilities also available from Major Geeks web: http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads8.html

I've been repairing PCs for over 15 years now. I use many software programs in diagnostic, recovery, and have been able to save 99% of them if the HD, except those that were struck by lightning. But the software I use costs lots of money.

Your options depend on the problem with the drive. Are you getting an error when you turn the computer on? Is the drive appearing in the system at all? Have you atttempted to repair the drive with any utilities including Microsofts Scan Disk(sometimes runs on boot if it thinks a problem has occured) and lastly how important is the information. If you are willing to spend a few hundred dollars you could look at ontrack.com ar a similar agency, otherwise most drive manufacturers have utilities that can be downloaded to test and do small repairs to your file system if the drive is operational.
using a working system go to the manufacturers web site and download the utility to a bootable floppy or CD, Then follow the dirrections for testing and repairing the drive.

Hi. Install it as a SL (slave drive) with your new disk as MA (master). Then you might be able to copy the files from the old to the new.
