I hate answering these questions because I feel like my answer will be dumb. But I think what highers self-esteem is being thankful for yourself and all the good around you. I used to always have low-self esteem until I turned things around and started appreciating the little things. Getting ready in morning, I would look in the mirror and pretty much look in the mirror and see all the imperfections. But now, I'm more confident just thankful that I have a life and wonderful people in it. We all have different life paths. There are always people a lot worse off than you are. Even though my life isnt perfect, it's good enough to me. Thinking positively really brings my spirits up and prevents me from being so depressed. Helping people reallly raises all my self-esteem and appreciating myself that I took time to make myself look good helps me out. Some people find themselves only seeing little bits and pieces of a picture, look at the full picture =]

I agree with Sunshine´s answer. Volunteer work makes your life meaningful and makes you feel somehow special. You see that are a lot of people out there leaving in much worst conditions than yourself and that makes you value more what you have, not just material, but also your family, friends, opportunities, job,...
About self esteem...It might be hard to keep it up when nowadays culture have such high standards. Those people in TV look perfect, with no flaws at all. I have met very beautiful girls who think that they still have to loose weight, or get silicone, or have their nose done...You shouldn´t compare yourself to anybody. Take care of yourself: wear nice clothes, wear a little make up, smell good, keep your hair nice, but above all accept yourself and have a very positive attitude towards you. That will make people like you doesn´t matter how you look.

Start by volunteering... somewhere doing anything..
In giving back in life.. is when we find real meaning.. joy and happiness

And better yet.. doing something for someone and not having anyone see it is even better...Its the little things in life that trully matter.. so do them.. a random act of kindness
