I want to set up a quarantine/hospital tank in addition to my main 44 gallon community tank. Assuming I can use water straight out of my main tank, how long does the Q tank need to actually be up and running before it's assumed to be fully cycled? Thanks.

You could use some water from the main tank. The bacteria that break down the waste aren't there however. They are in the gravel and in the filter.
If you use a corner filter (really old style) as many fish stores still do, you can reuse a bit of the filter floss to "re-seed" the new media. Corner filters make great filters, especially for quarantine tanks.

bring the water up to temp.
run a filter- with no carbon.
what are you going to quarantine- ick?-fungus? parasites
i have one for every disease in my store, but many people can't do this. every new shipment of new fish i get- which are shipped in species bags- goes into a tank i have set up (20 gal. long) for 4 days before offered for sale. i realize that is not an option for anyone not in the business of making a living from this hobby.
but i like to sell HEALTHY FISH.
people are very much more likely to return if they don't buy a fish or two and get an infected tank as soon as they add them.

I propose you flow with a stay rock filtration setup somewhat than the biowheel. this is safer and extra clever. For a 29 gallon tank around 40 5-50 lbs might do precise. not all could desire to be stay rock you're able to be able to flow with 30 lbs base rock and 15 lbs stay rock or fiji. Run sufficient water bypass interior the tank (2 powerhead pumps for starters placed on the ends). determine you have calcium based sand, around 3-4 inches. confident a skimmer is rather clever yet not needed. With heavy bioloads it is going to become significant. Corals choose a extra diligent and (costly) lighting fixtures device. The lighting fixtures device it desires is extra complicated and working it is going to hike up your electric powered bill so do evaluate the capacity situation. crawl and learn extra approximately marine tanks. sturdy success.

you should set up your tank add the drops to get rid of the chlorine and let the tank run for 48 hours before adding fish.
