Hi,

I don't know how much you want to upset the apple cart in your class but if you really believe in freedom of speech and challenging the lies about the war on Iraq then take a look at the links below.

The war had nothing to do with Bin Laden, terrorism, WMDs but it had everything to do with oil, or more importantly how that oil was sold. I don't know how much you understand about US economics but for the US to survive economically all oil must be traded in Euros and the dollar must remain as the reserve currency for the rest of the world. Saddam Hussein challenged this in 2000 buy trading his oil in Euros and converting his reserve currency to Euros. In doing so he challenged the US dollar hegemony.

Basically all countries need oil and to buy this oil they need dollars. This allows the US to import goods cheaply because all importing countries need the dollars in return. Thus the US runs a 48% trade deficit - importing 48% more than it exports.

When oil is sold in Euros the value of the dollar drops and more and more countries cash in their dollars for Euros. Remember that there are more dollars outside of the US than inside it. In cashing in these dollars it is in effect like calling in a huge bank loan. The US simply would not recover and would plummet into recession.

Iran have begun trading oil in Euros and Venezuela are looking into the same thing. OPEC are also considering this. Look how high Iran and Venezuela are on the the US hit list. Bush at the minute is frantically using US military power to try to send out a message to oil producing countries but it simply isn't working.

I hope you can follow the information in the links below. I would be interested in your classes reaction. If you find this information useful and use it in class, please e-mail me and let me know what the reaction was.
