In most states in order to practice in the schools you need to take specific courses and/or obtain a specific credential. The dept. of education in NJ will be your best resource (also the large MSW programs would be good resources too). DA.

Every state has different requirements for school social work. And, there are various types of social work you can do in a school system that require different levels of licensing.

In Massachusetts, you need to have an LICSW and be considered "Independent" in order to practice as a School Adjustment Counselor. However, that are loopholes even to that, as long as you are being supervised by an LICSW. This is just one example of the- "well, if" phenomenon of social work!

Because every state has different licensing requirements- start at the state level to find out what you need. The Department of Education is a good source. Or, contact the NASW in NJ to find out if they have a school social work committee. We do in Massachusetts. The chair of that committee should be able to offer you some guidance. Also, if you have not already done so- start working with kids! That should go without saying, I'm sure but when I've posted for help in my guidance office for school social workers- I get very random resumes. I'm looking for someone who is clearly dedicated to working with children, has experience in education (volunteer tutor, etc.), and is comfortable with character/life-skill education. That is a major part of the role at my school, so it matters.

Hopefully this is helpful! If there is one thing I enjoy talking about it's school social work, so feel free to ask if you need more guidance or clarification. Good luck- it's a GREAT field!!
