"The whole issue of street gangs is an overreaction. Most of the members of street gangs eventually 'grow up' and lead productive lives. Increasing gang enforcement and labeling these youngsters as 'gang bangers' only adds to the problem."

Not in the least. The facts point in the other direction. Street gangs are a menace and unfortunately their influence is on the increase. They do not usually grow up to be productive members of society.

Labeling and law enforcement are not the cause; they are the effect.

Gangs serve a significant social purpose and have been with us for all time. The problem now? The violence associated with today's gangs has begun spilling over (excessively) into the lives of 'ordinary' people.

The more this violence is spread by the gangs, the stronger will be the response by the law. Ordinary people can no longer police their own neighborhoods.

There is no evidence to support your statement about "productive lives". In fact, most evidence is to the contrary. The #1 cause of death among black males, aged 16-24 is black-on-black homicide

Not at all. Those street gangs eventually grow up yes thats true but to be what? career criminals oh thas productive.

I dont think increasing gang enforcement or the labelling is the problem...the problem lay on their economic conditions, parental upbringing and most importanly themselves.
It is their choice to become gang banger no? I think its time to stop trying to pass the blame on others but instead take a look hard at yourself (gangbangers).

That statement is wishful thinking, not supported in fact.
