There's only one way to budget your finances and that is basically the old income/outcome method, writing it on paper, at a glance you can see how much you have to spend, how many bills still to pay etc, so long as you don't forget to add/take off new/old standing orders/direct debits, or amend them when necessary

I have been using MS Money for some years. It enables me to keep good track and to budget sensibly. It does NOT generate extra money, unfortunately!

Type 'budget planner' into google or yahoo and you'll get hundreds of samples to choose from.
You could set up your own based on samples on a spreadsheet and tailor it to your own needs.
General guidelines: 25% of net income for 'living', that is, clothes, food and entertainment. 15% for consumer debt repayment; 40% for fixed expenses (mortgage, car, etc) and 10% each for savings and emergency funds.
Aim to have 3-6 months gross income in fluid savings for emergencies, live on cash, cut up your credit/debit cards unless you're in the habit of paying them off in full every month.
Good luck!

The one I recommend is Mvelopes Personal. It really lets you plan forward, not just keep track of what you've already spent. (That's the big flaw of Quicken and the others like it. They're good at tracking but not so good at planning.)
More info about Mvelopes here...

I find Microsoft money a good tool to use. It should already be installed on your computer.

If you look at www.moneysavingexpert.com you can download a monthly planner spreadsheet or just use an excel spreadsheet with running totals.
