If you have a rectagle measure the two sides and multiply. If you have a triangle, measure the height and base and multiply and divide by 2. If you have another shape you will need to use the formula for finding the area of that shape. You may be able to divide the yard into shapes which you can then use a formula you know, such as a triangle and a rectangle combined. Since you have 5 measurements, it sounds like that is what you did. You would never just multiple all of your 5 measurements together.

A two-dimensional space cannot have five dimensions. You need to cut it up into smaller, precise chunks.
