Yes, Elle made Max think he was going mad and in the process made him mad. He did leave and send a message via Harold for Steph to stop looking for him and to move on. He did then move in with another family as they helped him when he was destitute. Elle found him and Janae convinced him to come home.
Steph had just told Toadie she loved him. Steph was confused. Everyone was telling Toadie Steph would choose Max, most noticeably Karl who told him that and he hoped he could keep some dignity. This was just before Steph came to tell Toadie she chose him. Toadie jumped in and said he knows It'd never work and pushed her away. That same day she asked Max to move back in, but in separate rooms. He took her ballooning even though he hates heights. Toadie overheard Karl say to Susan how he was Stephs first choice. Toadie chases after Steph. He finds them laughing and kissing on the grass. Steph said she remembered why she fell in love with Max. Toadie professes his love but Steph says she's back with Max now.
Steph and Max try to make it work, but they keep trying to avoid being alone together. One day they are going through old photos and remembering the old days of their wedding and such. They start kissing but after a minute they stop and admit to eachother that something's not right. They've lost something. They both know it's over.
Boyd had given them a getaway for Valentine's Day, but instead they go and visit Lyn and Oscar. When they come home they tell the kids. They have one last family picnic, and Steph and Max say they "did good, didn't we?". Max has gone back to the oil rigs.
Steph is now jealous because Toadie is seeing someone else - an escort he hired to make Steph jealous and to make everyone else think he was OK after he lost her. The escort liked Toadie and asked him out socially. She says she only goes out to dinner with men and that's as far as it goes. Steph saw her with another man and told Toadie she was "stepping out on him" and he got defensive.
