Palawan is the right place for you HOWEVER it might not be cheap. Palawan has beautiful scenery and beaches in the northern part. Calauit is also located near Palawan which is an island with imported African animals like zebras, giraffe and others. These animals were brought to the island by then Philippine Dictator Pres. Ferdinand Marcos as a safari ground for his son, Ferdinand Jr. who is now a governor in the Ilocos province.

For me the best vacation place is Boracay. You're on the beach but you still have all the convenience of the city, like bars, internet access, ATMs. It's Malate in a Bikini! It need not be expensive if you know how to look for the right places to stay.

As to animal parks, though, the only one I know is a wildlife park in Palawan, and going there can be expensive.

Cheap & hip. Difficult combination.

Busuanga / Coron is very nice, not a huge nightlife - but the beaches and nature are very nice. There is also an animal park on Caluit, and you can find cheap accomodation.

Panglao island off of Bohol might have a bit more going on with bars and stuff and should also be reasonable from prices.

In particular I recommend Davao City. It's safe, with many beach resorts especially across the island garden city of Samal.
There is also the Philippine Eagle Center, Eden garden and the Crocodile Park.

For beach bars, try Boracay. For animal parks, try Calauit Island in Palawan.

But for a real surprise, try Baguio City -- a peaceful getaway in the cool and misty pinetree-clad mountains of northern Luzon.
