If there isn't a specific material required by your professor, be creative. I made it through on a very tight budget with a little ingenuity. Just remember that the model is not meant to be an exact replica of the finished product. If you use a stiff poster board, you can score a corner to show the brick coursing. You can also glue a textured paper on the model to produce the qualities of the materials. If you want to show wood, get some veneer to put on a small section of your model. Don't go overboard. They will be looking at the design most of all. If you design a brick building, and make the model look as though it is all brick, it could be very distracting. I am assuming you will have measured drawings as well. If so, show the materials in this medium. It works better graphically, and it is so much easier.

You will most likely need different basswood rods for columns and such, bet they are very cheap at craft stores. Go to your local craft store (such as Michael's or Hobby Lobby) and look around. Let your imagination guide you.

If you need more help, feel free to email me! Good luck!

The sources with the greatest variety of materials are probably model railroad building and doll house making with all kinds of scale surfaces and treatments like shingles, clapboard, brick, etc. Whether the scale matches what you want to do is another matter. While the doll house supplies may be at Michaels and Hobby Lobby, the train supplies and more doll house stuff will be at specialized shops run by dedicated hobbyists. If you have a good art and architect supply house, like Asel Art, you might check what they have.
