Las Vegas Strip is way better, I would never go to downtown if I were a tourist in Vegas... I used to love vegas and I used to come to Vegas all the time, almost 4 times per year for vacacitions... but then I moved here, is not much fun if you live here... but still I love the strip!....
You don't want to rent a car.... save the money and expend it in a reasonable priced hotel in the strip... and just walk from there anywhere in the strip....
There is so much to do in Vegas that you would need to come two week and even you would see everything or do everything you can do here... And it is ever changing, then if you came long ago, coming now will be like shocking! It changes in a daily basis almost.... Even me living here see the changes every week...
If you need a complete guide of what you can do in Vegas, just email me to cra_88@hotmail.com
I actually made a guide for my ex-boss that came to Vegas some weeks ago.. I can send it to you via email...
Shows... (more than 30 maybe)
Night Clubs... (more than 40 maybe)
Free shows... (at least 15)
Free atractions... (many without taking into consideration the free shows)
Lounges... (as many as nightclubs)
Other Atracctions.... (talking into consideration the roller coasters, rides, etc)
And I will give you some idea of which are the highest rated and most popular....
Stay on the strip and don't go to downtown...
Stay on a hotel on the strip and don't rent a car... walk...
And welll, remember... "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas...
For any questions or if you want the guide to Las Vegas just contact me @:

We quickly learned after moving to Las Vegas that Downtown was the best value and is actually pretty fun. On Friday and Saturday nights Freemont is one of the best times you can have in this city. It is more laid back than the strip, not overly pretentious at all. The area is just as safe as the strip, maybe even safer due to the small enclosed area. You can still get great food at old Las Vegas prices downtown, and the slots pay WAY better than on the strip!

the strip is the "newer" Las Vegas. back in the days, downtown used to be the attraction but as soon as one big company started to build their gigantic sized hotels and casinos...more people flocked to the strip.
My opinion is that the downtown is more ghetto to a visitor's eyes but is probably just the locals that go there. The strip is better because everything is newer there, the larger hotels and casinos are there and so is most of the attractions.
I would stay on the strip rather than in downtown anyday....even with the large $ difference. I just prefer the more "touristy" feel with all the other people....

My husband and I go to Vegas about 2-3 times a year every year. Have been for about 10 years now, and are moving there this summer. Anyway, to get to your question.
In my experience, I like both for different reasons.
First of all, I would like to say that we go Downtown often and I have never felt, unsafe. I guess it just depends on where you go Downtown. We stay pretty much in the center and go in and out of the casinos. We particularly like the free entertainment there. And yes, the strips "free" entertainment is flashier, but, we like the "old school" feel of downtown. Also, it's cheaper to drink there, if you like that sort of thing. And we also have found that for the most part, food is cheaper and just as good. Even things like Crab are to be had for a fraction of what you pay for it on the strip.
We like the "show" downtown. It's pretty fun to watch and they change it up so that it's not always the same one.
That being said, we do love the strip. The spectacle is huge. And the "free" entertainment is over the top. As well as the "paid" entertainment. And we do like to go down there. It gets crowded sometimes, but, we don't mind that. And we do get away from the strip as well. We have relatives in Vegas and we like to take the Harley to the dam or even to Cali. If you don't want to rent a car, and you want to get around on the strip anyway. There is always the tram. My husband and I use it every time we go. You can park at one end and ride back and forth and get from one end to the other, and various points in between in literally minutes. And yes, you still have to do some walking, but, not nearly as much. We find it very helpful and use it all the time when on the strip.
So I guess it's just what you like and how much you want to spend. And what you are expecting, that really determines your level of fun or enjoyment in either downtown or on the strip.
I mean none of it is for everyone.
Most people either LOVE Vegas or they HATE it.
But, we love it all. For different reasons, in different spots. It's all relavent to the Vegas experience.
But, don't discount downtown. If you are trying to save money, it's a good place to do it.
We have stayed in hotels on the strip and downtown.
And most of the rooms downtown are just fine.
Mostly not as fancy as the ones on the strip can be. But, for the most part, they are clean, roomy enough and, in our experience, safe.
Again, it's just what your tastes are and what you want to spend.
Our viewpoint is, why spend too much for the room, when you are only going to be there to shower and sleep.
The rest of the time, you are gone. So as long as it meets those needs, we are not that picky. And of course, clean and safe.
We don't have anyone to impress, it's all about comfort and having more money to play with.
It's just our opinion.
And everyone is entitled to theirs.
Everyone we have ever taken to Vegas with us loves both.
It's fun to see the different cultures that come together, and the "crazy" people of downtown usually stay in the background.
They have never bothered us. And we always have fun.

I loved the main strip, so much to see and do. I reserve one night for downtown though. I adore the light show, and the enclosed space where you can walk in the street. I found some very interesting street vendors there, but, I wouldn't go there by myself, I would definitely want a male escort. The casinos do look rather seedy and I didn't go into any.
I loved the water show at Biagio as well as the show at the Rio.
I took the Gondola ride at the Venetian, and I have to say, going at night was most romantic, and you didn't have to deal with the glare off the water from the sun.
I loved Vegas. Can't wait to go back.

Downtown is perfectly safe if you stay under the Fremont Street covering. The casinos have lots more atmosphere than the plastic strip, especially Binion's, the Golden Nugget, the Four Queens and of course, the Golden Gate. Table minimums are lower and perfectly decent hotel rooms are very cheap. Plus, you walk your feet off on the Strip. Give me Downtown anytime.

The strip is much better, stay between Tropicana & Ballys, after that you find some shady characters after Bally's and beyond, and downtown Vegas (Freemont St. area) nothing but homeless, white trash, and street bums)
