Tables and charts let you see the numbers in an organized way, and to visually see trends and differences. Simply writing out that information, it turns into a bunch of numbers and the meaning gets lost. The difference is the way the reader processes it--you should make it as easy as possible for the reader to understand your message. The best way is to use a table or chart, and then pick out some highlights--things that stand out or that summarize the trends on the table--to go over in the text.
