The controllers won't work. The old Xbox had special connectors for the controllers. The new 360 controllers are either wireless or are connected through an USB cable.

The remote I don't know.

If you intend to buy the Xbox 360, you can use the standard Xbox 360 controllers to control DVD viewing. The Media Remote is not necessary for DVD watching.

On the old Xbox Microsoft didn't want to make the Xbox more expensive, because if a device plays movie DVDs, the maker must pay licensing fees.
For the Xbox Microsoft decided to let the buyer decide.
With the Xbox you can only play games, and pay no DVD licensing fee.
Theoretically the Xbox was able to play DVDs, but wasn't allowed as long as the remote wasn't used.

So if you want to watch DVDs you had to buy the extra remote that had the license fee included to watch DVDs (you paid for the remote and the license).
If you didn't want to watch DVDs you saved money with the original Xbox.
