Recently I bought a thinner cable to connect my harddrive with instead of the bulky ribbon cable, and it didnt seem to work. After hooking up my old ribbon cable to the harddrive with everything as it was when it worked last, I turned on the computer and the harddrive and the dvd drive didnt start. I eventually figured out that if i unhook the dvd drive, the harddrive will work. This is great temporarily, but can anyone tell me what is wrong and how i can fix it?

The jumper on the drives must be set as Master for the HDD and Slave for the DVD.

The other possibility is that you have plugged the flat cable into the DVD the wrong way round. (the red stripe should be the No 1 wire, look on the case or label on the DVD for the position of No 1 wire) Whilst this is possible to get wrong on some cables it is rare these days. Most modern cables will only fit one way.

PS as it is the HDD that stops I believe your DVD must be set as master and should be Slave

Sounds like you have a conflict on your IDE cable. Check the jumbers on the drives and/or the plugs on your new cable.

You have to change the jumpers on the back to make one a master and the other a slave.
