I'm a junior. I mostly want to major in fashion design, but i'm scared if I do I'll have trouble finding a job out of school. So then I thought of majoring in fashion design and business, to help get a business going. So do you think i should major in fashion design and business... or
Major as a chemistry teacher so I'll have some sort of a steady job out of college, and business. And then I'll take some fashion design classes in the summer or during the breaks. My main dream is to be a fashion designer, but it's such a hard business, and I'm good at chemistry. So yeah, thanks!

I'd do fashion design, at the best fashion design school you can get into (if you're not already in it of course, you can transfer, or do postgrad work...). Maybe minor in another visual art like graphic design if you want to broaden your appeal later.

There are different levels of fashion design, it's only extremely competitive at the top level. Plus there are related jobs, for instance you could use your degree to give you some clout in an advocacy group against anorexia, or for more modest clothing... and of course there's the whole retail thing (people who understand design can rise up the ladder more quickly).

And most jobs which require a degree don't specify which degree.

It depends on what kind of hard work you're willing to put in. I struggled w/the same thing over a different major. For fashion design, you would probably want to attend a school near NY or LA where you would have a better chance at landing a worthwhile internship. Good internships are really important for that major I think. They give you connections and necessary real world experience. You will also need to do a lot of networking in order to make connections that could help you out in the future. Also, you don't need to be one of the top designers to do great. There are designers that sell their own stuff on the internet and make great money at it because they've built up a customer base and done a lot of promotion.

On the other hand, yes, a chemistry teacher would be easier as far as a straight and sure path to follow. I say just know what you're getting into w/each one and go w/your gut feeling.

Hi,
I think its good that you obviously have a practical head on your shoulders, and that your thinking realistically, but I think you follow your heart and do the fashion design! Only you yourself know how talented you are in this field, but from past experiences I believe you always achieve more doing something that you feel passionatley about. If you work hard enough for it, you will succeed. If you combine fashion with business it will open lots of oppurtunities when you graduate. You could always get your foot in the door by becoming a fashion buyer for large chains, in return you'll be paid well, and will be able to pick up tips about owning your own business and starting up in the designing process! Also try researching work experience for fashion in the summer. If ever your out of money whilst studying for fashion, you could always pick up some extra pennies tutoring kids in chemistry in your spare time.
Good luck in deciding!!

Some of the most effective education programs I know of combine trainings from the arts and the sciences. How about something like a chemistry major with a fine arts minor? Then think about getting in to design using alternative materials.

I would go after the fashion design, but as a back up plan I would also take graphic design as well. This way you will have a few more options and some course may overlap letting you finish your education in a timely way.
