Marty Schottenheimer who was just fired from the SD Chargers. The guy is the third most winningest coach in the history of the league, coached his team to a league best 14-2 record last season, was got fired for the effort and replaced with Norv Turner, who doesn't even have a winning record as a head coach! I'd have to say that's pretty underrated.

Andy T - I stand corrected. Marty is not the 3rd winningest coach in league history, but nor is he the 5th. I did some cheching and he is actually the 6th winningest coach in league history. At the end of the 2006 season, Marty's win-loss record was 200-126. That put him ahead of Chuck Knoll at 193 and Paul Brown at 213. One more point of interest, at the end of the last season, Marty had more regular season wins than any other active coach in the league.

I'm not a big Marty fan, but I still find it amazing that the Chargers fired the guy. Look at the condition the team was in when he was hired. He took over the team with the league's worst record and five years later he had turned them around to the team with the league's best record. But still they fired the guy because of a personality conflict with the GM. I think if I had been the team President, I would have been more inclined to fire the GM. Like him or not, Marty is a proven winner.

The coach that catches the most tough breaks would have to be Marty. Heartbreaker playoff losses in Cleveland, KC and San Diego. He's a good coach, but snake-bitten.
I would say the most underrated is Jeff Fisher with the Titans. He's been through a couple of rebuilding processes in Tennessee and continues to get a lot from his teams. Almost makes you wish more teams would find a good coach and stick with him rather than start all over every third or fourth year.

Marvin Lewis. He has turned the Bungels into a team that actually scares me when my team has to play them. He catches the most tough breaks because obviously the GM or whoever picks the players over there cant pick guys with good character but if his whole team hadnt had warrents out for their arrest the Bengals could have went to the playoffs and done some real damage. He is one good defensive player and cutting the bad seeds away from a superbowl.

That is in the NFL right now? That leaves out Marty and Martyball. If the man could win in the playoffs he would have the Championships and be employed. So I agree about Fisher. Hey he has to be doing something right to still be with the Titans. After that since someone said about play calling how about Billick? Look how the Ravens offense turned around after he took over the play calling. Oh and the comment that even Bellichick couldn't coach the Browns, that's because he is over-rated. Either that or we need to give Marty more credit for him doing good coaching them as well.

Mike Nolan-He's improved the 49ers team drastically, making all the right moves. The option to not resign Kevan Barlow giving Frank Gore a great season, improving the young offense with Norv Turner, signing some great Free Agents, not to mention drafting Alex Smith, Frank Gore, and Vernon Davis.

Well, as long as it took the Bears to give Lovie Smith an extension, you have to say it is him...He lead his team to the Super Bowl, for crying out loud, with what most consider the laughing stock of starting NFL QBs...(Hmmm...Why didn't they go after Plummer, however?...I bet he would have played there and not retired)...and they waited about a month after the Super Bowl to give the coach some respect in the form of a contract extension...

i dont think it is the chargers, i here all the time that they are the most talnted team in football they have not made it to the super bowl though and have not shown that much in the playoffs thats why people dont say they are hevy super bowl contenders i would say the titans, they have a really good D, they stop the run and are good against the pass, and vince young is a good young QB, a good OL and running game they just need WRs and they would be a great offence, but they will make the play offs and I think they will make it out of the first round this time and when ever i see people talking about the teams there team can beat they always say they can beat the titans even if the team isnt very good

Schottenheimer. He gave the Chargers 3 straight winning seasons. 2 of those AFC West Championships.

Good luck Marty.
