My 2001 Automatic Cavalier has been surging in and out lately. It like cuts out when you accelerate (most of time while trying to shift gears). Sometimes the "track off" light shows up while cutting out...I'm afraid it's the tranny, but the car only has 46200 miles on it, What do you guys think?

It shouldn't be the fuel pump, this car has been acting up on me for awhile, It died three times in like 2 months, the shop changed the fuel pump twice and then the fuel memory brain I think they put it...

It could be several different things and without proper diagnostics it's hard to tell. Best guess, it sounds like you are having computer or sensor problems actually.

You have several different sensors that tell your computer(PCM) to act, which in turn tells the transmission computer(TCM) to shift up or down. It could also be a burnt wire somewhere in the loop.

My advise to you is to take it to a certified and trusted technician to have it looked at and repaired.

I would check all vacuum hoses for leaks. To do this yourself easily; wait until the car is good and warm, then, with the engine running, take some carburator spray or ether and spray short spots from a distance, one at a time, over all the areas of the engive where hoses connect and run. If you do, in fact, have a vacuum leak, the engine idle will increase immediately upon being sprayed. Usually, all you need do is replace the hose.
If you find no vacuum leak; then have timing checked. I would also check the Distributor cap for pitting on the contacts and fine cracks. If in doubt, replace it. Replace the rotor at the same time.
Have you put fuel injection cleaner/treatment in lately? This could also make a difference.
Start with simple checks and go from there. Chances are, this is where the problem lies.
Good luck.

Sounds like you need a good tune-up! If the engine doesn't run properly, the transmission can't shift properly either! With 46,000 miles I highly doubt you have a serious transmission problem! Sounds more like tune-up neglect and/or a fuel problem! I would suspect a faulty fuel injector which can cause it to run abruptly if it's a fuel problem. Why would the guy replace the fuel pump when he can check to see if it is operating properly? Not once but twice????? I would look for another mechanic also!!!!!

sounds like your getting some electrical gremlins in the transmission. either the solenoids, track control system or possible the transmission control module is acting up. first things to check would be the fluid level and condition. make sure its filled and check color and smell of it. if its red and dont smell that bad, suspect faulty electrical. if it is a brown to blackish color and stinks really bad suspect transmission being burnt up. on the slim chance it is a pinkish white color suspect busted radiator, meaning that the trans cooler has failed letting the anti-freeze and water mix together. not a good thing. hope this helps ya some.
