Hello everyone! I just moved into a new home that was constructed in 1960. All of the appliances are from that era. My stove, which is useable, needs to be cleaned. Since it is a gas stove from 1960, how would I go about cleaning out the oven? Same way as the newer models? Easy off and a good sponge or is that a disaster waiting to happen?

Start with the heatproof bowl of ammonia first. If that doesn't do all of the cleaning, wait 2 days to use the easy off stuff. Remember, the hotter the water, the better the cleaning. To prevent build up, here are a few old tips: When baking a pie, put a cookie sheet lined with foil under the pie to catch drips. This can be used for anything you cook or bake that is smaller than the cookie sheet. Any spills can be tossed out with the foil! I have a new gas stove with electric pilot igniting system. I miss my old stove! Remember, a stove that old always has some heat from the pilot light! If removing the burners for cleaning, use the shut off valve for the gas. Happy Cleaning!

Yes you can use Easy off or use a heat proof bowl filled with Ammonia put on the bottom of the oven over night in a closed cold oven and wiped with a warm or hot sponge the next day. When you get your oven cleaned you can stop it from getting as dirty the next time it is used by simply sponging on White Vinegar all over the oven avoid electrical switches and wires when wiping. Good Luck !

If it is a self-cleaning oven (and I doubt it if it's from 1960) do NOT use oven cleaners. Otherwise, Easy-off and a good sponge will be fine. You should be able to remove the burners and clean them in soapy water and use a toothbrush or toothpick to unclog holes. Dry thoroughly and test it before assuming it works and you blow your house up.

IT COULD BE A CONTINUOUS CLEAN OVEN. IF SO DO NOT USE EASY OFF OR ANY CLEANER. THE OVEN WILL HAVE A COATING ON IT. THE COATING CONTAINS A SUBSTANCE TO PROMOTE BURNING OFF OF THE SPILLS AT A FAIRLY LOW TEMPERATURE. YOU CANNOT WIPE IT CLEAN-THE SURFACE IS TOO ROUGH. YOU HAVE TO RUN IT AT A HIGH TEMPERATURE FOR A TIME FOR IT TO DESTROY THE SPILLS AND SPLATTERS. IF IT HAS A SMOOTH PORCELAIN OVEN COATING, YOU CAN USE THE EASY OFF METHOD.
