My boyfriend got my 97 eclipse stuck in our driveway. He hooked a chain up to something underneath and pulled it out (with a couple of big yanks with the jeep). The next day I drove it to work and couldn't go past idling without it wanting to go off the road. I thought it might have been the ice on the road but I have NEVER had this kind of trouble before. I was driving home and a snow plow stopped me and said my wheel was dog legged bad. I got the car home, finally, and noticed the passenger rear tire was pointing out a little. He has now jacked the rearend up and saw that a bar is bent. Does anyone have any info on what the part might be and the extent of fixing it? He wants to take a big sledge hammer to it to fix it. I don't want to go that route. Any info would help. Thanks.

Babak, how can you help? It's not the axle and I know there is a component bent. I just don't know what components are under there. He isn't the brightest bulb in the store, but he's my sweetie!

Doug, thanks. I was thinking of a track arm. I was checkin it out on the net shortly ago and that was the only thing I saw that was back there. Do you know of any parts place with pics I can look at?

you bent the lower track arm, replace it dont straighten it ,it will bend again, then get a 4 wheel alignment.next time he should watch what he hooks too.there should be a tow loop under the back

You need to take it to a repair shop, preferably an alignment specialty shop and have it repaired. You cannot expect to repair it with a sledge hammer if you want your tires not to wear unevenly. He seems to have damaged (bent) a component which keeps the steering and wheel alignment straight.

Snow by itself is not bad, I really dislike the people who don't know how to drive in it, and also people who tie chains around parts that bend.
Do not let him "bang" it back in shape, as he is putting your safety at risk.
Have him finally do something intelligent and go buy the part from a salvage yard and replace it like it is supposed to be done.

sounds like he bent your rear axle.. you need to take it to a mechanic to get it fixed (replaced) since if your boyfriend was a mechanic he would not have hooked up to the axle to pull it out in the first place.
