Adding wood ashes to the garden soil, what benefit is there? What drawbacks? Anything to look out for?

It raises the PH which is good for some vegetables such as beets, but be careful that you don't raise it much.
Its always good to check your PH once or twice a year. You can do this by taking a soil sample to your county extention office or pick up a PH measuring device at your local home center

I honestly can't remember the benefits other than it is good for the soil but...
the drawbacks were that when the dog & cat walked through the garden & into the house it was a mess !!

We started adding the ashes to the compost & that worked out much better.

ashes are very acidic, so unless you know the current PH level in your soil then it might make the soil too acidic and it wont help. You can get test strips to see what the acid level is. Then you can play around with adding ashes to a bowl of soil and seeing what happens. But for the most part it isn't recommended.

Benefit: Keep the moisture in the soil;
Disadvantage: If it is not composed, it will no have any nutrition to the soil.
