that should use the 5W30 oil. the 4.0 ,4.6 and 5.4 engines have a hydralically controlled timing chain chain tensioner in them. they really dont like the heavier weight oil. It is important to make sure you keep the proper weight and maintain proper oil change intervals on these type of engines. it can use the 10W30 but ford reccommends you use the 5W30. hope this helps.

synthetic oils are fine for any mileage car how does an engine know it has synthetic oil in it? is it smart? or smater than some?
I have had 3 explorers and my 1994 2dr 5spd i used regular oil and changed it every 2500 with ford filter i used what ever oil was on sale 203000 miles later i sold the truck to a friend and its still going. my second was 2000 2dr 4x4 and i used amsoil in everything engine, tranny, diffs, transfercase changed it every 6000 miles with a factory filter no problems 135000 miles traded it for a nissan traded the nissan for a sporttrac and im running royal purple just run what you feel comfortable with if you think the high mileage oils give you better protection then run that changing it is the key to long life of an engine
there are some people that still think if you run synthetic you have to stay with it because they are not compatible with regular oil I and the oil co's say horse schnit. Why do you think they sell a blend of syn. and reg?

There are various types of wrenches that will definatley get the job done with no effort. Some are plastic strap type wrenches(work on all filters), some are cup shaped like the end of the filter and use a socket wrench to turn it. (different for each filter) I have a chain vise grip that works great for anythjing round.(the chain vise grip is a little expensive, but a great tool to have around) You will be fine for a few days with the old filter. (the fella that said you wouldnt be is wrong!!!) You can change the filter once you get a wrench, just add a 1/3 quart of oil to compensate for what is in the old filter when you switch them out.

Check your fill cap. I'm noticing Ford used a lot of 5W20 in their vehicles. A Synthetic Blend would be a little cheaper than synthetic and still work very well.

Get the Synthic Oil they have now. It is for high milage vehicles and will keep the seals from leaking and it is great for the vehicle over all. It costs quite a lot more, BUT well worth it.

do not put synthetic oil in a high mileage motor that has only been using regular oil. synthetic oils can cause seals to blow and will cause internal and external oil leaks.
use the oil recommended by the ford motor company for your location.

The one that is recommended in your owner's manual. If you don't have a manual as your local Ford dealer's parts dept. for one.
