there is a device out ther called a wogs valve which with the aid of a pan detects a leak in your water heater and turns off both the gas and water to the heater, I would advise this for a new or old water heater in a finished basement.

Get a new water heater installed. They generally only last about 10 years. Have the new one installed with a drain pan underneath, and a drain pipe run to a working floor drain or sump. It will be a LOT cheaper than repairing the water damage it if fails, and a new one will cost less to operate.

You can purchase a large pan to put under heater, it has an opening in side to attach plumbing to your drain system. So, when heater leaks, the water is drained safely away.

get a new water heater! i dont know for sure, if its leaking, put plenty of towels around it so that it doesn't get the rest of the basement
