"U.S. per capita cheese consumption was 31.3 pounds in 2004."
Seems you may have identified the source of our obesity problem.

Americans do eat quasi-cheese-like substances which the FDA allows the manufacturers to call "cheese", e.g. "Cheez-Whiz", "Philly" and "Velveeta". They also eat a lot of processed and pre-grated mozzarella, bland versions of cheddar and gruyere (which they call "Swiss cheese"). They even make their own mild cheddar in Wisconsin.
They eat some real cheese, too - feta and Monterey Jack (you don't get Monterey Jack here, it's pretty good, too), and have blue cheese dressing on their salads and grated parmesan on their pasta.
In better restaurants across America you'll see goats cheese on the menu; most of it is produced in California.
The main difference between America and Europe is, in Europe, cheese is something to be eaten on its own with a piece of bread or a biscuit, whereas in America, it's something to put on or in something else like a pizza, a taco, a grilled cheese sandwich or a cheesecake.

Americans are suspicious of cheese, especially Swiss, Dane and German cheeses, which all have holes in them, and thye think cheese is another American policy statement.
Please tell me I do not have to explain the humour in that.
Ps: judging by the comments here, crass comments mostly, from crass Americans, is there any other type, they are easily fooled by an obviously funny 'tongue in cheek' question.
Serious lot of bores, are they not.

Thats because cheese is used for other purposes in the USA - e.g to hold up bookshelves, as engine mountings in railway locomotives, and, most commonly, as electrical conductors in the power distribution network - theyre not fools, they look after the economy first, before considering their stomachs

Those are movies you're watching. I eat cheese everyday. I put grated cheese in my tacos, nachos, burritos, chili, stew, salad, and baked potatoes. (all these foods are American). We make the best cheeses in the world. Know where? Wisconsin. That is a state, in case you didn't know.

Americans do eat cheese!
We eat Tons of it!
We put it on top of baked dough and call it PIZZA!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Probably the reason why Americans do not eat more cheese is because we have a lot of other "goodies" that are cheaper and easier to get.
